In 1991 Anne and John Phillips sold their mixed livestock, cropping and rice property near Deniliquin in NSW and bought 100ac (40Ha) beside the Barmah Forest in northern Victoria.
Anne planted 300 pomegranates in 2006. By 2010, another 1200 pomegranates were planted to make a total of 1500 pomegranate trees covering 4ac (2Ha).
Due to health concerns in 1986 Anne and John were looking for ways to minimise exposure to chemical pesticides, especially with a young family of four boys.
After visiting multiple Bio-Dynamic farms in Eastern Australia Anne and John began the transition to bio-dynamics on their 800ac mixed farming property near Deniliquin.
Due to borrowed capital for farm improvements for irrigation efficiency in the late 80’s, coinciding with extremely high interest rates and very, very poor prices for wool, lamb, beef and rice, Anne and John decided to sell and down size.
This downsize lead to the smaller acreage beside the Barmah Forest now becoming known as The Pomegranate Farm.
Since 1991 The Pomegranate Farm has been operated following Demeter Biodynamic farming methods. This entails cover cropping, rotational grazing, pasture harrowing, mowing and application of the biodynamic 500 preparation to help improve soil health and produce nutritious food for enjoyment and health.
Our pomegranates and fresh squeezed pomegranate juice are sold at Victorian Farmers Markets in Melbourne from late April extending through till August most years.
